A new artwork in the Binckhorst

On September 5, 2023, the Binckhorst in The Hague received a special artwork: a huge mural by the Rotterdam artist Koen (Bier en Brood). The work depicts a tesseract, a mathematical object that exists in four dimensions. The inspiration came from Escher's famous Belvedere, where the fascination with the impossible and the intertwining of forms is central. Just like with Escher, this mural also invites you to look from different angles: from three perspectives, the artwork changes shape and enhances the illusion of a tesseract.

The connection to the Binckhorst

The painting beautifully aligns with the Binckhorst, a dynamic area known as a breeding ground for innovation and entrepreneurship. That versatile and changeable character is perfectly captured in the design.

Collaboration and realization

This special project was realized by Streetartprojectsnl in collaboration with the Municipality of The Hague and a group of involved entrepreneurs, including Unknowngroup, Secrid, Renewi, Sunnyway BV, Boelsrental, Stichting Haags Industrieel Erfgoed, and De Boer Autolak.

The role of video and drone footage

The complete video of this project was made by Mafalda Madeira, with music by Jonathan Renoux. For the aerial perspectives, I was allowed to provide the drone footage, which better showcases the impressive scale and dynamics of the mural.
